Creative Ways for Families to Celebrate and Remember MLK Jr.
✓ Celebrate MLK Day reading meaningful movies, books, about MLK Jr.
Discuss who he was, what was the dream, why the dream. How can children and adults live out the dream.
✓ “Our Words Matter” – talk to your children about words that are hurtful to others (name calling, bullying, mean text messages, etc.) that create division and separation, low self-esteem, etc.
Learn a quote of MLK Jr. that is meaningful to you, your children, etc. Draw the meaning of the quote and color.
Have a family MLK Jr. breakfast or dinner to commemorate his legacy, read a few of his quotes, talk about his dream.

Atrium Health National Observance and CMS Arts Writing Contest Awards
This event will be a multimedia display of the arts, featuring Charlotte-Mecklenburg School students in spoken word, music and dance performances, as well as their paintings, sculptures and other works of art. The program will engage people of all ages in reflecting on the words of Dr. King as a moral opinion leader.
Renowned journalist, author, international speaker and political commentator Roland Martin will be the featured speaker at this event.
It will be Sunday, Jan. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church, 700 W. Sugar Creek Rd., Charlotte NC 28213.
Atrium Health Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service
This event, which occurs on the actual birth date of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is held to commemorate the life and death of Dr. King. The brief service includes a wreath-laying ceremony and will take place on Monday, Jan. 15, 1-2p.m. at Marshall Park, 800 E. 3rd St., Charlotte NC 28202

The day's theme, "Truth & Reconciliation", seeks to acknowledge the truth of how far we have come, how far we have to go, and how we might collectively get there. MLK Day Programming We present panel conversations that address the truth of our history from the perspectives of scholars, elders, and leaders. We highlight artists who creatively celebrate the echoes of the Civil Rights era through performances and workshops. The day's programming has offerings for children and families seeking to create together, history and culture lovers who crave contemplation and collective planning, and art lovers who enjoy meditative and immersive art experiences. We welcome the entire community to join us throughout the day.
